Music Theory 101 Lessons

To fully understand and learn Music Theory one must learn how to read music. Even the great artists who never learned music have taken the time to learn it now to improve their playing. Plus it is the easiest and fastest way to get a new song idea written, you know that one you hear in your head.

Our free Music Theory 101 online course will get you started with all the fundamentals of music so you will have a solid Music Theory foundation. While these fundamentals can be applied to any instrument we will focus on music theory for guitar and how these principles are applied on the guitar.

Music Theory 101 lessons will cover the following topics:

  • Music Notation
    The Music Notation section will cover Musical Staffs, Time Signatures, Notes, Rests, Note Values and how to apply them to the beats of the music. Key Signatures, Ties and Slurs, Accidentals (Sharps, Flats, and Naturals), and Accents. This section will show you how to read music. Our Beginning Guitar 101 Course will show you teach you on how apply these fundamentals to the guitar.
    • Musical Staffs
      The treble, bass, and grand staff will be covered and how notes are applied to the musical staffs.
    • Time Signatures
      What do those number mean and why are they always changing? The time signature will be your friend are you progress though our lessons as some are easier to read while others are required for certain types of music.
    • Notes
      Whole notes, half notes, quarter notes will be discussed and you will be able the hear how they differ and how to write them.
    • Rests
      Whole rests, half rest, quarter rest will be shown and this will be quietest lesson you will have.
    • Note Values and Beats
      How to count notes and beats will be discussed and the dotted note will be explained.
    • Ties and Slurs
      How ties and slurs are used to extend note will be shown and how to write them.
    • Accidentals
      Sharps, flats and naturals will be shown and how they affect the notes they are applied to.
    • Key Signatures
      All key signatures and how to identify the key of a song will be show and why they are used. Accents The four common accents: staccato, tenuto, accent, fermata will be shown with examples on what they do to the musical notes. Hairpins Although rarely seen in music hairpins have a great impact on the music and will be shown and how to write them.
      By the end of this section you will be able to read music in any style.
  • Guitar Tablature
    The Tablature section will teach you how to read Guitar Tablature and Guitar Chord Diagrams and which fingers to use to play the chord properly.
  • Scales
    The Scales section will cover the three most used scales in music:
  • Intervals
    One of the most neglected aspects of Music Theory is intervals. Being able to play and understand the intervals will increase you improvising techniques and aid in training you ear to be able to play what you hear. Blues House Academy believe intervals are so important we will cover different aspects of them in every course.
  • Cadences
    Our cadence section will cover the four most popular cadences. Cadences are used for ear training, and building progressions in music.
  • Rhythm
    For every guitarist proper rhythm and timing is essential for playing. Our rhythm practice sessions will teach you the basic rhythms of music theory. As you progress through the three practice sections your timing and ear training will improve. These essential lessons must be mastered for every musician.

Beginning Guitar Lessons

Our free online beginning guitar lessons are designed to get a you be able to play your first guitar chords, guitar chords progressions, rhythm guitar and how to improvise on the guitar with your first lead guitar solo.

If this if your first guitar instruction you receive you will be in good hand as we will make sure we help you avoid any bad practicing methods. With over forty years of playing the guitar we have learned the right methods to play the guitar for the best sound, practicing methods and the fastest learning techniques available.

Our free beginning guitar lessons are aimed for anyone who wants to learn the guitar to be able to. Our first instructor lead guitar lessons were free so we are glad to help future beginner guitarists.

Our free guitar for beginners course covers the following topics:

  • Getting Started Lesson
    This lesson will teach you the basics of the guitar so you can start to play it and will cover the following topics:
    • Parts of the Guitar
      This lesson will cover all the hardware and electronics that make up a guitar and include descriptions of the head, body and neck of the guitar.
    • Types of Guitars
      This lesson covers solid-body guitar, acoustic guitars and other guitar types such as the dobro and double-neck guitars. Also included are the type of bass guitars.
    • Other Guitar Equipment
      Other Guitar Equipment includes picks, tuners, metronome and drum machines.
    • Holding the Guitar
      Whether you sitting or standing this lesson will show you the proper way to hold a guitar.
    • Holding the Pick
      This lesson will cover type of picks and how to hold them.
    • Tuning the Guitar
      Last but not least this lesson will cover tuning the guitar and how to test if the guitar is completely in tune.
  • Chords
    This lesson will cover the parts of the guitar, types of guitars, holding the guitar and tuning the guitar. This lesson is not only aimed to get you ready to play the guitar but includes your first guitar chords. Guitar chords covered will be the open guitar chords in major, seventh guitar chords, and extended guitar chords such as four finger and barre chords.

    All though we don’t expect you to be able to play these extended guitar chords right now you will learn them and can begin practicing them. Most of these extended guitar chords take three to six months before you can play them effectively due to the need of building up your hand strength.
    • Practicing Tips
      This lesson will give you valuable practicing tips and habits to avoid. We will cover right and left hand techniques and how properly learn a new guitat song.
    • Warm-Ups
      We will cover how to warm-up your hands before playing. These warm-up lessons are valuable for every guitarist at any level.
    • Creating Chords
      This lesson will cover creating major and minor chords. This lesson explains how chords are constructed from the major scale and minor scale.
    • Open Chords
      The first guitar chords everyone learns are what are called open guitar chords. These chord use the open strings to help create the chord. We will cover triads, 7th chords, and extended and barre chords.
  • Progressions Lesson
    Our chord progression lessons will teach you the 12-bar blues using the long and quick progressions. We also include a rhythm section to teach you your first blues rhythm guitar song.

    The following topics will be covered in this lesson:
    • Short Progressions
      Our first progression will be the common I V, and I IV V progression, here you can practice your chord changes with several examples.
    • Long Progression
      Our 12-Bar Blues Long progression will introduce you to one of the most popular progression for all styles of music.
      Here you will able to practice with a backing score as well.
    • Quick Progression
      The 12-Bar Blues progression with a quick change will be introduced. This is the basis to almost ever blues or rock tune written.
    • Shuffle Rhythm
      Our first rhythm will be a simple shuffle as this is one of the most fun to play and will introduce you our first rhythm guitar score.
  • Scales
    The guitar scales lesson will teach you the Chromatic Scale, Major Scale and Natural Minor Scale. These three scales are the foundation to all of the scales in music theory.
    This Lesson will cover the following two scales:
    • Chromatic Scale
      The one scale that contains ever musical note available. This will help you learn the notes on your guitar and is the foundation to all music.
    • Major Scale
      The major scale will be our first scale that is derived from the Chromatic Scale. We will show you how it is constructed and how to play it on the guitar.
  • Soloing
    After learning the scales is it time to practice them in your first guitar solo. You will learn several riffs or short leads for the guitar and use them to build your first lead guitar solo.
    This Guitar Soloing lesson will cover the following topics:
    • Riffs
    • We will teach you several riffs to play on the guitar. Once you get these few riffs down you will be able to move to the next lesson and build a solo with them and practice your first lead guitar solo.
    • Solos
    • This lesson will build two solos from the previous riffs you learned. Once you get these two solos down you will be able to create your own riffs and build your own solos.

Beginner Guitar Songs

We have included several beginning guitar songs for you to practice. These songs are great for everyone since most people already know them so learning them will be easy and you can focus on playing the guitar

  • Beginner Songs
    These beginner songs will aid in your development of playing notes and contain only the melodies of the most popular beginning guitar songs.
  • Intermediate Songs
    Our intermediate songs will still only be the melodies but will have more notes with a faster tempo.
  • Advanced Songs
    Our advanced songs will have melodies with different time signatures so you can practice your counting with the various time signatures.
  • Beginner Chords
    These will be your first songs with chords and will help you in practice changing chords

WHY LEARN IT

Guitar Chords 101 will introduce you to movable chords, how guitar chords are constructed, how to move to chords around the fretboard, how to alter chords and chords substitution. You will learn how to implement the new chords truly have fun playing any song with the new chords.

Our practice lessons are a guided progressive method in learning the chords so you can understand each chord construction and to help you play complex chords around the fretboard.

Moveable Chords

Guitar Chords 101 will cover chords that are called Movable Chords so that you can play them anywhere on the fretboard. We will also focus on the notes under your fingers so you will start to learn the notes of the fretboard as well.

Chord Construction

This course will cover  the basic guitar chords of Major, Minor, 7th, Diminished, and Augmented. We will then show you how to build complex chords like 6th,9th, 11th, 13th and 6/9 chords from these basic chords.

This beginning guitar course covers just the beginning to be able to play the guitar and the simplest chords is the goal. After these lessons our Intermediate Guitar Course and Advanced Guitar Course will make a well educated and well rounded guitar player our of you.

Patience at this level and with these lessons and a desire to play is all that is needed. Getting your fingers to move where you want them and building finger strength is just the beginning. The simple songs are the songs everyone learns and practices when getting started.

The time and practicing you provide will be the most rewarding and memorable experience you will have when learning the guitar. Everyone remembers these first days and wonders if they can really learn to play the guitar. With patience, time and a desire everyone can learn to play the guitar.

It is because of this frustration and commitment that you give to learn to play that provides the satisfaction of accomplishment that will drive you to keep playing and always wanting to improve. It is this satisfaction that makes guitarists never want to stop playing.

Since you must play with both hands at the same time and until they both work together your sound will not be as good as you would like. This hand and eye coordination is what makes the guitar one of the most difficult instruments to learn and to play.
