Tuning the Guitar

how to tune a guitar

Use a tuner to get use to tuning the guitar and if the needle on the tuner is far right you must loosen the string to get to the right tone. It is common for new guitarist to over tighten a string and break the string when trying to tune it. So always keep a few spare sets of strings handy. You can’t play without strings.

Guitar Strings

The guitar strings are numbers from the top down where the top is the fattest string and the bottom is the thinnest string.
The 6th string is tuned to E and is called the E string.
The 5th string is tuned to A and is called the A string.
The 4th string is tuned to D and is called the D string.
The 3rd string is tuned to G and is called the G string.
The 2nd string is tuned to B and is called the B string.
The 1st string is tuned to E and is called the E string.

Manually Tuning

Tune the Low E string to another guitar or instrument, then use the Low E-string as a reference note.

Tuning the A-string
Pick the E-string at the 5th fret.
Pick the open A-string.
Adjust the A string until it has the same pitch as the 5th fretted E-string.

Tuning the D-string
Pick the A-string at the 5th fret.
Pick the open D-string.
Adjust the D string until it has the same pitch as the 5th fretted A-string.

Tuning the G-string
Pick the D-string at the 5th fret.
Pick the open G-string.
Adjust the G string until it has the same pitch as the 5th fretted D-string.

Tuning the B-string
Pick the G-string at the 4th fret.
Pick the open B-string.
Adjust the B string until it has the same pitch as the 4th fretted G-string.

Tuning the E-string
Pick the B-string at the 5th fret.
Pick the open E-string.
Adjust the E string until it has the same pitch as the 5th fretted B-string.

String to String Tests

String to string tests after tuning is fun and it is good to see how well you or the tuner did and to fine tune it a little more as well.

A few string to string tests to use are:
Open 6th string and D string 2nd fret - E notes.
Open 5th string and G String 2nd fret - A Notes.
Open 4th string and B String 3rd fret - D Notes.
Open 3rd string and E String 3rd fret - G Notes.
