Our free Music Theory 101 online course will get you started with all the fundamentals of music so you will have a solid Music Theory foundation. While these fundamentals can be applied to any instrument we will focus on music theory for guitar and how these principles are applied on the guitar.
Music Theory 101 lessons will cover the following topics:
Music Notation
The Music Notation section will cover Musical Staffs, Time Signatures, Notes, Rests, Note Values and how to apply them to the beats of the music. Key Signatures, Ties and Slurs, Accidentals (Sharps, Flats, and Naturals), and Accents. This section will show you how to read music. Our Beginning Guitar 101 Course will show you teach you on how apply these fundamentals to the guitar.
Guitar Tablature
The Tablature section will teach you how to read Guitar Tablature and Guitar Chord Diagrams and which fingers to use to play the chord properly.
Scales
The Scales section will cover the three most used scales in music: Chromatic Scale, Major Scale and the Natural Minor Scale. Mastering these three scales will improve you playing and you understanding of music theory on the guitar.
Intervals
One of the most neglected aspects of Music Theory is intervals. Being able to play and understand the intervals will increase you improvising techniques and aid in training you ear to be able to play what you hear. Blues House Academy believe intervals are so important we will cover different aspects of them in every course.
Cadences
Our cadence section will cover the four most popular cadences. Cadences are used for ear training, and building progressions in music.
Rhythm
For every guitarist proper rhythm and timing is essential for playing. Our rhythm practice sessions will teach you the basic rhythms of music theory. As you progress through the three practice sections your timing and ear training will improve. These essential lessons must be mastered for every musician.
Advanced Rhythm
After mastering the basic rhythm lessons these Advanced Rhythm lessons will help you develop an advanced musical ear and rhythm. To be able to play anything you hear you must be able to play the rhythm first and the notes second.
Circle of Fifths
Used for reference this diagram will aid in memorizing the sharps and flats of any key as well as aid in practice all aspects of music theory.
Circle of Relative Keys
The circle of relative keys will help you play in any minor key and aid in your understanding of relative major and relative minor scales, chords, and keys.
